India's AI Policy: Government Announces ₹10,000 Crore National AI Mission

Union Cabinet approves landmark National AI Mission with focus on healthcare, agriculture, and governance applications.

The Union Cabinet today approved the National Artificial Intelligence Mission with an outlay of ₹10,372 crore, marking a transformative step in India's journey to become a global AI powerhouse.

The mission will focus on developing India-specific AI models in 22 Indian languages, with special emphasis on healthcare diagnostics, precision agriculture, and smart governance systems.

The government plans to establish seven AI Centers of Excellence at IITs and establish a compute infrastructure of 10,000 GPUs accessible to startups and researchers at subsidized rates.

Tech industry leaders welcomed the announcement, calling it a game-changer for the Indian startup ecosystem and a critical step in building indigenous AI capabilities.
